Description
On June 27, 1996, the FDNY officially re-designated its Rehabilitation Units as Recuperation and Care Units (RAC Units). Operated by the Special Operations Command, these units respond to All Hands and greater alarms to provide on-scene support to firefighters.
Depending on the weather, RAC Units supply members with cold drinks and chilled towels in hot conditions, or warm beverages and heated shelters in the winter. Designated rest areas are set up using equipment such as E-Z Up canopies, chairs, cots, heaters, blankets, and cooling tents with misting fans (requiring a water source).
There are five RAC Units in service:
RAC 1 – Engine 91, Lower Harlem
RAC 2 – Engine 222, Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn
RAC 3 – Rescue 3, The Bronx
RAC 4 – Special Operations Command, Roosevelt Island
RAC 5 – Engine 242, Southwest Brooklyn
Each unit is staffed by one firefighter per tour (light duty), and utilizes commercial or military surplus ambulances. Quarters are equipped with ice machines to keep coolers stocked, and each unit carries a full complement of rehab gear.
