Did you know?

Engine 160 went into service on October 1, 1915, equipped with a 1913 Nott 500 Gallon Per Minute Rotary 4-Cylinder combination pumper (registration #923). The company roster included eleven men, led by Captain Frank P. Haley (transferred from Hook & Ladder 78) and Lieutenant James P. Lynch (from Engine 159), along with nine firemen.

Nicknamed the “Hillbillies,” the company earned its name by responding to neighborhoods such as Park Hill, Grymes Hill, Emerson Hill, Todt Hill, Fox Hill, and Dongan Hills. Notably, Engine 160 was the first company on Staten Island not organized in a former volunteer firehouse.

Over its 100+ years of service, Engine 160 has seen many changes. On November 7, 1955, Brush Fire Patrol Units were established at Engines 158, 159, 160, and 162. These temporary units operated during brush fire conditions, using spare pumpers, civil defense pumpers, or the second piece of a two-piece engine.
