Serving Red Hook since 1913, Engine 279 and Tower Ladder 131 have over a century of proud service to the community. Engine 279 functions as both a Decontamination and Communications Unit, while Ladder 131 serves as a SOC Support and Water Rescue Unit.

Retired firefighter Harry Gillen, a longtime member of Ladder 131, still visits the house daily. After sharing breakfast with the crew, he climbs to his third-floor workshop where he continues to create stained-glass artwork for fire companies across the city—just as he’s done since retiring in 1998 after 41 years on the job.
