Engine 231 was formed in 1892 and originally located at 1772 Pitkin Avenue. In March 1905, Engine 231 and Battalion 44 moved into their current firehouse on Watkins Street. One month later, Ladder 120 was organized and quartered in the same house.

Over the years, Watkins Street has been recognized as one of the busiest firehouses in the FDNY. Members assigned there have received numerous department commendations and unit citations. The house is also known as a “study house,” a reputation that has contributed to many of its members being promoted—some rising all the way to the rank of Chief of Department.
